Types of Homemade Chip Dips

It's the time of year for hanging out with friends again, or for just lounging around on a hot and lazy weekend. If the only thing that you'd like to do is marathon in front of the TV with your favorite TV shows, then you know that there is a certain food topping that is as essential to your enjoyment as the air that you breathe. What's a lazy weekend indoors without chips, and lots of homemade chip dips?

Homemade chip dips are better than the icing on the cake. Icing on a cake is a take it or leave it proposition, but most chips scream out for dip. If prepared correctly, the dips outshine the chips in many cases. Here's a look at some of the most popular homemade dips that go extremely well with a variety of chips, or even vegetables.

French onion dip is a type of potato chip dip that everyone has grown up to love. It's hard to believe that something so rich can create something that sticks in the minds of so many people who have enjoyed this through the years. This is made out of sour cream, and typically a very simple soup recipe. Many people simply used dehydrated onion soup mix made by Lipton. However, any brand of dehydrated soup mix will do the trick. Not only is French onion dip great for potato chips, and it also goes well with a variety of sliced vegetables such as celery, or cucumbers. Some people love taking this dip the next level by using it as a spread on hamburgers or even chicken.

For those who want a south of the border feel with their homemade dips, there is the five player dip, and the seven layer dip. The five layer dip encompasses the use of a layer of refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, and tomatoes. Some people like to take this to the next level by adding a couple of more ingredients, such as ground beef, and either olives or scallions. Part of the fun of eating this is being able to scoop up all of the layers, so that you can capture the entire sinfully rich flavor.

For those who might be lactose intolerant, or for those who might want fiber in their diets, there are homemade dips made out of beans. It's extremely easy to use beans from the can, such as black beans, refried beans, or even chickpeas. These can be blended in a food processor, and they create some of the most simple but delicious dips around. Keeping it Latin and spicy, a person can absolutely create their own salsa dips. A salsa typically is a tomato-based sauce that can be useful for regular potato chips, or typically for tortilla chips. Some people like to get summer time fresh with their salsas, and they'll make peach and pineapple salsa. There are variations of the salsa recipes on the Internet, but typically the addition of fruit is what makes the salsas special.

Last, for the person that wants to enjoy their vegetables with their dip so they don't feel so guilty, there is spinach and asparagus dip. These two vegetables can be created as a dip separately, or together. They find their way in mayonnaise based dips, sour cream-based dips, or cheese-based dips. These ingredients are also great with the additions of chicken or crab.

So the next time you're wanting to enjoy a lazy weekend with friends, or by yourself, make sure that you stop by your grocery store, and grab some really simple ingredients to create some over-the-top homemade dips for your chips.
